Hiring Resources

When a person interacts with a website, their experience influences their emotions, attitudes and perceptions of the company. This is known as User Experience (UX) and it’s an important consideration for any business.

When it comes to recruitment, providing a positive candidate experience is a crucial and often-overlooked way to gain a competitive edge. Offering a frictionless and slick user experience for candidates will improve their perception of your company and make them more likely to advance through the talent pipeline.

Read on to learn how optimising candidate experience can boost your conversion rates and ROI (Return on Investment) and ensure you’re attracting top talent.

What is candidate experience?

In recruitment, there are broadly two categories of users: recruiters and candidates. It has been argued that recruitment traditionally prioritises the recruiter. For example, job postings are written in a way that makes it easier to filter out candidates, rather than to attract and engage potential candidates.

The candidate experience journey is the candidate’s experience of applying to a role, from their first interaction with a company’s branding to final submission of their completed application. This end-to-end journey needs to be optimised at every stage to ensure a great candidate experience.

What is the cost of poor candidate experience?

Here at inploi, we understand the cost of neglecting the candidate experience. A study has shown that 75% of users make judgments about a company’s credibility based on the company’s website. A poor candidate experience could cause a potential applicant to develop a negative perception of the company, causing candidates to drop off at an early stage in the hiring journey. And in today’s crowded talent market, that could mean losing top talent to your competitors.

What’s more, leaving unsuccessful candidates with a negative perception of your company reduces the pool of talent that you could draw on in the future.

What makes a great candidate experience?

In order to understand what makes candidates tick, inploi conducted a wide-ranging survey of today’s job seekers. We found that 50% of them considered an easy application process to be crucial when deciding whether to apply to a role. 48% of jobseekers valued the ability to apply via mobile phone, which is unsurprising given that 71% of respondents said that their preferred device when searching for and applying to jobs was their smartphone.

So, creating a positive candidate experience starts with overhauling the front-end of your talent attraction. It should be mobile user-friendly, with content which displays well on all devices; and seamless and easy to navigate, so that candidates can move quickly through different stages of the candidate experience.

Companies can also make use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) to automate certain stages in the candidate experience journey. For example, the latest technology enables recruiters to leverage developments in conversational AI, or “chat bots”, to combat the dreaded recruitment “black hole.” In 2019, 26.4% of jobseekers said that not hearing back from potential employers was their most serious concern when applying for jobs online. Automated messaging ensures candidates are kept in the loop, making communication more efficient and less labour-intensive, all whilst improving the candidate experience and boosting ROI.

What is the value of optimising the candidate experience?

A seamless, easy-to-navigate interface will also reduce candidate drop-off rates, improving both conversion rates and ROI. It gives companies a competitive edge, so that they can retain top talent and avoid losing candidates to their competitors. In fact, candidate experience can be a “key differentiator in the battle of talents”, allowing recruiters to stand out in a candidate’s market.
