At Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, we employ locally employed doctors (LEDs) and clinical fellows in various roles, often to cover gaps in the core psychiatry training scheme across the Thames Valley and Wiltshire. LEDs are encouraged to participate in local teaching programs, which include professorial meetings, journal clubs, and Balint group sessions held in Oxford and Buckinghamshire. They are supported by medical leadership, the Medical Workforce and Education Team, and the Resident Doctor Forum (RDF), which helps address issues through quarterly meetings and negotiations.

The Trust anticipates expanding the number of LED posts in the coming years and plans to introduce an LED Lead role within the Medical Education team to further support their professional development. This role will assist LEDs in progressing their careers, whether through application for core training positions or exploring other medical roles, such as specialty doctor positions. SAS doctors are a diverse and integral group within the medical community, and the newly reformed 2021 contract has introduced exciting opportunities for career progression, helping them become senior leaders and educators. With the flexibility of the new Portfolio Pathway for Specialist Registration (CESR), SAS doctors now have more pathways to join the specialist register and apply for substantive consultant roles across the NHS. At Oxford Health, we have nearly 40 substantive specialty doctors and are launching the specialist role to further support career growth. We are also expanding our successful Portfolio Pathway Fellowship program, investing in training, research, and development to help our doctors progress and become future leaders in healthcare.

To support this progression, Oxford Health runs an annual SAS Development Day, featuring inspirational speakers and opportunities for doctors to share their career experiences. SAS doctors are an essential part of our workforce, represented in senior medical committees, and encouraged to develop peer groups and participate in QI projects. The Medical Support Worker (MSW) role was introduced by NHS England during the Covid-19 pandemic to provide support for newly qualified and international medical doctors in the UK. Initially offered as 6-month fixed-term contracts, the role has evolved with Trusts now able to fund MSW positions beyond one year. Working under the supervision of senior doctors or consultants, MSWs perform essential routine clinical tasks, gaining valuable experience within the NHS. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust has successfully recruited and retained MSWs, integrating them into both substantive and bank roles across various inpatient and community services.

MSWs typically work 37.5 hours per week and are paid at Band 6 under the Agenda for Change salary scale, with flexibility for part-time work depending on service needs. Key responsibilities include assisting with clinical procedures such as taking observations, performing ECGs, accompanying consultants on ward rounds, scribing patient records, and supporting in clinical emergencies. MSWs also undergo continuous training to ensure high standards of care, including mandatory training in infection control. With opportunities to build skills and gain hands-on experience, the MSW role provides a vital stepping stone for international medical graduates within the NHS.

Oxfordshire Community Dental Service provides special care and paediatric dentistry across multiple sites, offering routine and urgent dental care to adults and children who may not otherwise have access to these services. The team uses a variety of treatment modalities, including sedation and general anaesthesia. The Out of Hours Service delivers urgent dental treatment when primary care is closed, operating between 18:30 to 21.30 Monday to Thursday, 18.30 to 22.00 Fridays and 09.00-18.00 across weekends and bank holidays. The team, including dental receptionists, nurses, and officers, provides face-to-face care for patients with urgent dental issues, accessed through the 111 service.
