Jo

I’ve been with SMBC for 36 years this year. I started with SMBC directly from school as a trainee estimator surveyor, on what used to be the old day release scheme. I attended college one day a week to obtain my HNC in Building Studies and then Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building.

Whilst training, I progressed to the position of Assistant Building Surveyor, then Senior Building Surveyor. My job involves a variety of roles such as carrying out condition surveys, defects surveys and measured surveys on site. Also, undertaking design works, submitting planning applications, co-ordinating with the mechanical and electrical engineers, clients and end users. I create tender documents and project managing schemes once they're on site.

Through my career I have developed an in depth knowledge of refurbishment and redevelopment of Housing, Education, offices, leisure and civic buildings including numerous listed properties. I have also gained experience in the management of a varied team of individuals, not only on a project by project basis but as a team of surveyors. What I love about my job is that no 2 days are the same, each project we deal with is unique and poses its own challenges and rewards. I love seeing a building having been stripped back to its original structure, then to visit and see it coming back to life as it is being repaired and refurbished.

Stockport is my hometown. I’m proud to work for the council and assist in making it a better place for residents and visitors.
