Castles
NOBODY MANAGES MORE ENGLISH CASTLES
From Norman earthworks to mighty stone royal fortresses and from Cornwall to Northumberland, they tell the story of turbulent medieval England.
The historic places in our care span six millennia and include palaces, houses, hill figures, castles, abbeys, industrial sites, Roman forts and even deserted medieval villages. Caring for these places and their collections for the benefit of this and future generations is a cornerstone of everything we do.
DISCOVER SOME OF OUR CASTLES
Belsay Hall & Castle
Set within the evocative landscape of Northumberland’s ‘border country’, Belsay comprises a medieval castle that was enlarged in the early 17th century, a Greek Revival mansion that superseded it as a family residence at the beginning of the 19th century, and an outstanding garden linking the two buildings.
Dartmouth Castle
One of the most beautifully located fortresses in England. For over 600 years Dartmouth Castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy, vibrant port of Dartmouth. It offers stunning views of the estuary and out to sea and offers a great family day out, whatever the weather.
Farleigh Castle
The remains of Farleigh Hungerford Castle stand in the beautiful valley of the river Frome, just nine miles from Bath. Started in the 14th century, the fortified mansion still has much for visitors to enjoy - providing a great day out for families, couples, and walkers enjoying the surrounding countryside.
Goodrich Castle
Set in beautiful wooded countryside above the River Wye, Goodrich Castle is one of the finest and best preserved of all English medieval castles.
Kenilworth Castle
Once one of the country’s most formidable medieval fortresses, the castle was later transformed into a spectacular Elizabethan palace by Robert Dudley in an effort to impress his queen.v
Prudhoe Castle
Bult as part of a series of Norman Castles along the Tyne after the 1066 Norman conquest, Prudhoe was continuously occupied for over nine centuries. It was originally the home of the Umfravilles but was eventually taken over by the famous Percy family who restored it.
