The challenge

Compass Group UK&I employs more than 60,000 people, and thousands of candidates pass through its careers pages and HR systems every day. After a year in which competition for hospitality roles rose sharply, the people team went looking for ways to simplify how it recruited: a talent brand that held up under that volume, an application that did not lose people part-way through, and data it could act on to improve the candidate experience and bring cost per hire down.

The constraint was that none of this could mean replacing the HR estate. Tribepad was, and is, the ATS of record; whatever sat in front of it had to keep it in place.

What we built

inploi delivered new careers and jobs pages hosted on a Compass domain, with a fast job search and a map of open roles, so a candidate can find, compare and apply for jobs from one screen. Conversational apply replaced the multi-stage form for every role: the first stage of the application is a conversation that captures candidate data without bouncing anyone between URLs, which is where the drop-off had been happening.

ATS sync keeps the pages current with open requisitions in Tribepad and delivers every applicant straight into it. Compass kept its systems and its process; what changed is the front end candidates meet. Analytics and attribution give the team full visibility of that front end, and hiring manager notifications give managers a live view of their own jobs.

What happened

Completed applications rose 42%. For the roles that had been hardest to fill, cost per application fell 50%. Around 20 hours a week came back to the Compass team, time that had gone on chasing applicants through a process that now runs itself. More vacancies were filled more quickly, which is what brought cost per hire down. The 2023 case study also reported a job-view-to-completed-application rate; it is shown below as published.

In their words

Last year we witnessed a significant increase in competition for roles within the hospitality sector, so we looked at ways in which we could improve and simplify the recruitment process. This led to us launching a new recruitment strategy and campaign, taking a more data-driven solution to reaching job seekers and creating a more efficient application process.
