What is candidate experience, and why does it decide who applies?

Candidate experience is everything a person meets between seeing a role and hearing a decision, from the job page and the application to the answers to their questions and the silence in between. It decides who applies because most people judge an employer in the first few minutes and leave before a recruiter ever sees them.

What candidate experience is

Candidate experience is the sum of every interaction a person has with an employer while they are deciding whether to work there. It begins before they apply, with the job title they read and the page it sits on, and it runs through the application, the questions they ask, the time they wait, and the way they are told yes or no. For a large frontline employer, most of that experience happens on a phone, in a spare ten minutes, with no recruiter present.

That is why it decides who applies. A candidate does not compare your process with a competitor’s process. They compare it with the last thing they did on their phone, and they leave the moment it feels harder than it should.

What goes wrong

The loss is at the front door, and it is mostly invisible to the team. Most visitors leave without applying, and the budget that brought a person to the role is spent whether or not they finish. Behind the door, most applications are never viewed, so even the people who complete the form often hear nothing.

Three failures do most of the damage. The application is long and built for a desktop. The candidate’s ordinary questions, about shifts, pay bands or the nearest site, have no one to answer them out of hours. And nothing tells the candidate what happened next, so silence becomes the answer.

What customers found

The cleared evidence points the same way. When Compass Group rebuilt its application, completed applications rose 42%. PureGym’s application now completes in under a minute. Côte cut its cost per application by 70%. In each case the change was at the front of the process, in what the candidate met.

What good looks like

A candidate finds a role by asking for it, in a conversation, not by paging through a list. The application adapts to the role and the region and finishes in minutes on a phone. Questions get answers at 11pm from the employer’s own approved content, and anything that needs judgment is handed to a person. When the application lands, it lands in the ATS the employer already runs, and the candidate hears back.

How inploi approaches it

inploi is the hiring experience platform for large frontline employers, and the candidate experience it builds is four things working together: careers sites that load fast, work everywhere and meet WCAG 2.1 AA; conversational apply, an application that adapts to the candidate’s role and region; the Candidate Agent, which answers from your policies around the clock and hands to a human when judgment is needed; and job distribution, which puts each role in front of the people who fit it. All of it runs on the ATS you already have, with ATS sync in both directions across 100+ integrations, so the ATS stays the system of record.

Candidate Agent

Answers from your policies around the clock, finds the roles that fit, and hands over to a person when judgment is needed.
